DRAW ANY ANIME CHARACTER IN YOUR STYLE

    ART BRIEF
SUBJECT: DRAW ANY ANIME CHARACTER IN YOUR STYLE
CONCEPT: You have a little more freedome with this one. Draw any anime character in your own style.
    Good luck!

    REFERENCE:
    See above.

    The Rules:
THE ART CLASH is a weekly art challenge. Each TUESDAY a new Art Clash challenge will be posted. You may work in ANY MEDIA you like, but you must stick to the brief of this week’s Art Clash. And please, no posting old work in the Art Clash. This is about encouraging growth through work, so we expect a new piece every time.

Your final art will need to be uploaded to an image hosting service (here are a few I recommend: Imgur, Google Photos and Flickr) and then may be posted here ANY time until SUNDAY evening at MIDNIGHT (EST). Voting begins immediately afterward and polls close on MONDAY at MIDNIGHT (EST). So don’t miss out!
The artist with the most votes for the week by the close of the polls is declared that week’s winner and chooses the next Art Clash.

***A BRIEF NOTE BEFORE WE BEGIN***
Just a reminder that we’re currently in The Art Clash version 1.1. The primary difference in this iteration is each week’s Art Clash will feature two tiers of competition: sequential and pin-up. Anyone entering can choose to illustrate that week’s challenge in a sequential storytelling form (page templates will be provided here) or as a stand-alone, pin-up-style image. Build and illustrate a story of your own around an Art Clash challenge, or wow your audience with a single powerful image. It’s up to you. We want to foster all levels of creativity here, so this will provide an opportunity for all artists to take their work in whatever direction he or she desires and to whatever degree of finishing.

Ever since I watched Naruto, I loved Kakashi Hatake. Instead of coloring, I used toning.

Holy Smokes, Steel! Would you give someone else a chance sometime??!?! Ha Ha. That is AWESOME. I may have some tips for you on using the tones for a little stronger effect. But wow…you’re fast.

I may have a position for inker available. 🙂

In case anyone’s interested, I tried a new technique on this piece last night. I tried to draw the piece in a way similar to Kim Jung Gi and just draw the individual forms. If anyone doesn’t know him, he’s the guy that just sits down and draws the whole image out without prelims or roughs. I’ve been trying to find a way to draw better and faster and was surprised to find it worked really well. In order to make it easier on myself, I focused on only drawing the lines, treating everything like I was making coloring book art, or something. I also drew in planes, focusing on and drawing the closest thing to our eye, then moving back. I think it works, though I did it on computer, so I could cheat and re-size everything when I took up too much space. In order to fix this, if I had a general idea of the pose I wanted to do, I’d make light hash marks on the top and bottom and sides, just to give myself an idea of boundaries to draw toward. Just a thought.

Guys, try experimenting with something like this and see if it frees you up with your regular way of doing things.

It’s not cheating, it’s using every advantage. 🙂

Brett- this is awesome. I really like the exaggerated pose and the expression on the girl’s face. With regards to inking, the line weights could use some more attention overall and specifically your heavier lines where the shadows would fall. I have exxaggerated the thickness in this example and I would focus on nice thick to thins if this were done in analog.

I struggle with this and it’s always easier to see in someone else’s work. I did a draw over quickly in PS and it’s sloppy but the main point is expressed even if it’s a bit shaky. hope it helps

You’re very right. I tried something like that in my piece this week. I start off with thin lines, then I come in with a thick pen. I love the way you did it in the first place, Brett. Both ways have they’re ups and downs. Good work, EVERYBODY!

Aaaaaand even though I’m not done inking this one, here’s Manji from Blade of the Immortal.

Knight, I really liked this challenge and think I’m going to do a whole bunch of my renditions of manga and anime characters in my free time. This was REALLY fun and inspiring for me! Great suggestion!

I have been working on this on and off since the movie came out. Alita is my favorite anime character at the moment.

I’ll leave this open until tonight. I was making dinner for hours yesterday and didn’t open the poll until late.

One thing I wanted to ask everyone is if any of you have specific goals for your art this year. And, if so, how are you working toward them?

I’m trying to be more free, more exaggerated in my work. Trying. I can REALLY deaden everything, particularly in the inks. I’ve been trying look more to artists like Joe Madureira and Eric Canete.

If you’re working on something, feel free to let me know. Maybe we can help each other hold the line on that goal.

Dafu, it looks like you’ve won. Congratulations! I love that rendition of Alita. Was mine supposed to have wings? I went back through the anime and didn’t see where she ever had wings.

    Ok, man, what’s next?

She had wings in the manga. Everything just look cooler with wings haha.

As for the next sketch challenge, since it’s March, there’s a #marchofrobots event happening on Instagram.

Basically design your own robot. And as an extra challenge lets give the robot a pet robot.
Hope you all have fun with this.

Brett, can you set up the post. I don’t even know how haha.

        Dafu,
I know two guys (and a couple girls) in our home who will REALLY appreciate this suggestion!

Right on! I’ll set this up right now.
